Demystifying Clinical Jargon

Episode 7

SEASON 1

Unpacking why a diagnosis is a roadmap, not an end point

In this episode, we are peeling back the clinical layers of the 'neurospicy' world with UK-trained clinical psychologist Dr Ashley Gibson, from Genesis Healthcare Center. When my son Monty was diagnosed, I was handed a stack of paperwork and left wondering what on earth to do next. Ashley and I sit down to unpack the technical jargon, explaining why a diagnosis is never an end point, but rather a vital roadmap for families navigating schools and therapies.

We dive deep into how a multidisciplinary team operates and Ashley introduces a comforting concept I had never heard of: 'watchful waiting'. This is for children who show traits but do not quite meet the diagnostic criteria yet. Instead of leaving parents in limbo, it focuses on immediate, practical support while keeping a close eye on their development.

We also clarify the often-confusing roles of psychologists and psychiatrists, before exploring the fascinating world of EMDR (Eye Movement Desensitisation and Reprocessing). Ashley beautifully explains how this trauma-based therapy helps file away those painful memories and experiences into the correct cabinets in our brains. It is a powerful tool, especially for those of us dealing with the build-up of daily rejections and critical comments that shape how we view ourselves.

Ultimately, we reflect on why getting a diagnosis matters. As Ashley beautifully puts it, "it is about having the right label rather than your child being mislabelled." This understanding helps ensure our children can finally stop trying to fit in and start to thrive.
